- Climate change poses the greatest risk to food security in Zambia. Our experience of crop failure caused by prolonged dry spells when crops are maturing is seriously affecting Small Holder Farm outputs. This year many farmers lost maize crops and other crops such as soya were affected. SAZ is actively looking at water harvesting, more drought resistant crops, soil moisture retention, and targeted irrigation.
- SAZ is now selling product to Choppies food stores and negotiations are ongoing with other food chains.
- The increase in value of the Zambian currency has affected our children’s food distribution programme. All foreign aid donated in pounds or dollars is worth 20% less than in 2021.
- The Central Statics Office of Zambia report a steady increase in food prices with interest rates at 9%.
